Program 1 - Shopping Tour in the Museum Quarter
|
|
Thursday, May 20, 2004
Morning
If high fashion, style, design and haute couture are of interest, then this tour is for you! Nestled in the heart of downtown, a Quarter of charm and tradition. A unique environment where art, fashion, culture and creativity come together.
Your guide will greet you at Centre Mont-Royal, and lead you on foot to the Museum Quarter.
The Museum Quarter owes its name to the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts, but it is easy to see, while admiring the superb facades of its houses and the rich architecture of each street, that the entire quarter is something of a museum. These beautiful residences, which draw their architectural roots from Italy, England and Scotland, began to appear in 1840 on approximately one square mile of land, where the country's richest families built their homes. This was called the Golden Square Mile and the Museum Quarter is located at the heart of it.
Free time for lunch.

Richelieu Valley
|
|
Wednesday, May 19, 2004
Your tour leader will greet you at Centre Mont-Royal, where you will board a motor coach that will take you to the south-shore of Montréal for a lovely drive along the Richelieu River on the Patriots Road, le Chemin des Patriotes.
An essential part of Canada's history took place on the shores of the Richelieu River. In the first years of the colony, this river was the only communication route from Lake Champlain to the St. Lawrence River.
Your first stop will be in St-Denis-sur-Richelieu, a tiny historic village on the Patriots Road. Next will be a visit to Clos Saint-Denis, an orchard and wine yard in Saint-Denis, right by the Richelieu River. The terroir characterized by the rich clayey soil, a vestige of the long-gone Champlain sea, a careful selection of different varieties of apples, and temperatures ranging from hot summers to spells of well below zero in the winter explain the uniqueness of Pomme de Glace, an apple version of ice wine produced here. After a tour of the grounds, you will be invited to taste some home products, after which lunch will be served. This will include several of Québec's terroir products and a glass of Pomme de Glace.
On you way back to Montréal, there will be a last stop at the Unibroue Micro-Brewery in Chambly. Your guide will describe to you each step of the brewing process, familiarizing you with the mysteries of traditional beer making. A tasting of several of their beers will conclude the visit.

Québec City
|
Perry Mastrovito © Tourisme Québec
On July 3, 2008, Québec City will celebrate its 400th anniversary since its foundation by French explorer Samuel de Champlain. When Champlain chose the location of his settlement he named "Kébec" (a word from an Amerindian language meaning "place where the river becomes narrow"), did he suspect that he was establishing the roots of French civilization in the Americas?
During the 17th and 18th centuries, Québec City was the centre of New France and its enormous territory. At the time, this "empire" covered all of what is known today as Eastern Canada and half of the Eastern United States as we now know them.
From its origin as a fur trading post to its present status as Québec's provincial capital, Québec City has restored and celebrates elements from its past. Old Québec was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. The best way to explore this historic neighbourhood is to stroll along its narrow streets lined with stone houses.
While in Québec, the only walled city on the continent, your guide will take you on a three-hour tour of its historical treasures.
Place Royale - Birthplace of French civilization in North America. The architecture of its homes and its narrow streets attract visitors worldwide (stop).
Petit Champlain district - Shop and lunch in the oldest quarter in North America (free time).
Escalier Casse-Cou - Translated as "break neck staircase" not nearly as dangerous as its name implies.
Funicular - Board an elevator that descends a cliff linking Upper and Lower Old Québec, giving you a magnificent view of the river and its surroundings.
Montmorency Falls - Impressive 83 metre (272 feet) high waterfalls that are 1.5 times that of Niagara Falls (stop).
Notre-Dame Basilica - Originally a chapel built in 1633 by Champlain, the founder of Québec.
Your tour will also include a view of the following attractions:
- Laval University
- Price Building
- Citadel
- Plains of Abraham
- Parliament Building
- Grande-Allée
- Place d'Armes
- Château Frontenac
- Ile d'Orléans
